The Newspaper Boy of Myanmar.

I've had just enough time to...   acknowledge the newspaper boy of Myanmar.

Taken on the way to the wholesale market outside Yangon, Myanmar

My Boy
He dreams
Of striking it rich and
Buying me a house to live in.

My Boy
He worries
About my health and
Saving to buy me new crutches.

My Boy
He wishes
To give more than love and
Love all the more because it is all he can give.

Meanwhile,
He wakes up early
Sells newspaper at the traffic stops
And dream of better days to be.

  1. I was on my way to the wholesale market outside Yangon when we were caught in a traffic jam. Suddenly, from among the vehicles; they appeared. Selling flowers for prayers, drinks to quench thirst, snacks and food on the long journey. I took a few shots from inside my car when I saw him approaching. Wearing a baseball cap, a T-shirt with the word “Goal” boldly written and dark brown sarongs, he held newspapers in both hands, one of which is obviously a sport magazine named “Goal”. Behind the approaching youth, was a stalled truck advertising milk powder with the brand “My Boy”. It was quite a poignant scene for me. He should be taken care of, and not be the one providing for the family. It was even more poignant for me for I was not brought up either mother’s milk (due to her health) or milk powder which was too expensive for the family.
