Part II – To Carve Out the Soul of An Elephant.

I've had just enough time to...   see how life was breathed into the elephants of wood.

Taken in a handicraft shop on the way to the River Kwai from Bangkok.

To carve an elephant
First, feel its might pulsating
Under your finger tips

Feel its gentleness
Feel its strength
Feel its tenderness
Towards its young

Feel its complexity
Feel its friendship
Feel its relationship
With its herd

Feel its rage
Feel its anxiety
Feel its freedom
In the wild

Dream what it dreams
See what it sees
Feel what it feels
Under its skin

Your hand will know when it is ready
When its spirit course through your vein
When tears well up in your eyes
As you touch the soul of the royal beast

This was taken during a trip to a handicraft center on the way to the River Kwai. I love to go to antique and handicraft shops for there are always things to discover while there. There are legends, and stories in every corner. And a fair representation of the popular culture of the country can also be found there. I can spend a lot of blissful moments slowly taking in the arts, skills and culture but this is often limited by the patience of my travelling companions  :)

Lovely words (from the heart) in the blog-spot...................... When I got married , a long time ago, a friend of my husband's family made some furniture for us... carving on wood of cherry-tree... and I still remember when he showed us his works..... he explained working the wood ... using more or less the same expressions and enthusiasm ...as your artist....
    Great great.... Thank you

The work and the master. Little separation between them, they are like partners in a dance. :-)

This is the finished work of one of the sculpture. Intricate and beautiful, isn't it? Love the rich detail and the craftsmanship. It is very interesting to watch the craftsman in action and I always wish that I possess such skill every time I watched.

  3. Very interesting post. Esp. the actual holders utilized to support the brain. I wouldn't have noticed it by myself. Must carefully examine outdated images to determine this attribute.
