Would You Be A Butterfly Or Would You Just Be You?

I've had just enough time to...   have a butterfly dream

Taken in the Kota Kinabalu Highlands Park, Sabah

I dreamt I was a butterfly
And it dreamt it was me
And each thought he has the better dream

From flowers to flowers I flew
It walked through the woods on my feet
I fluttered and rode on the wind
It swam with graceful ease
I tasted nectar fresh on the flowers
It tasted ice-cream cold from the fridge
Lying on the grass, it admired the million stars
I marvelled at the thousand suns perched on a leaf

Then we were before Him
And He gently asked –
Would you be a butterfly
Or would you just be you?

We have often heard how nice it will be if we are a butterfly or a bird. Who wouldn’t want to fly? But before we attempt to take to the sky, have we made full use of our God given gifts? Have we used our legs to walk through the woods in the freshness of spring, in the shade of summer, in the colours of autumn, in the silence of winter? When was the last time we greeted the sunrise, watched the sun sinking below the line, laid on the grass and looked up at the night sky. If our feet have not felt the coarseness of sand, the clinging mud, the dampness of wet grass, what business have we to fly?

I worked for several years with a child who became like my own... his cancer returned and I was with him to the end... I could not speak to him of death...it was not my place and his young age made it improper also... but he knew there were changes... so I did something that some Jewish people did with their children who were prisoners... they spoke of the life cycle of the butterfly and the changes... This child was blind and I made his braille books. I made the hungry hungry caterpillar... which follows the life cycle of the butterfly. as an artist I knew how to make cocoons out of foam and cotton... leaves out of paper... etc. so that he could feel his way through the book... as a coincidence some other children were about to release butterflies that had begun as cocoons in their jars... so he was able to take part in that... and some butterflies sat on his hands before taking off...
    butterflies are more than flight...
would I like to be a butterfly or me...
would I like to KNOW what was going on?????

Thanks Oola, for the touching story. Good of you to ease the child's ending and for your consoling story with its connection to the butterfly. As you knew, there was a death in the family and thank you for the empathy.

I believe the butterfly is a messenger. My dad died when I was far away on the other side of the world. I was devastated not to have been there to say goodbye. As the first pangs of grief consumed my being a butterfly alighted on my hand for a brief second. The sensation was that of an intense electrical charge. To this day I believe it to have been my dad's spirit, manifest as butterfly, come to say goodbye in order to relieve my pain. Sorry for your loss, thou.

It's a beauty! She came to you dressed in green. Last night my son & I lay on the rooftop at 2-3am to fly in the night sky with the Perseid meteor shower *~*
