In the Pahang jungle, I saw this man with the slow loris. It
was obvious that he has bonded with the animal and they treated each other
affectionately. But the slow loris is an endangered species. The cute, adorable
and gentle loris with its large eyes is popular as a pet but wild life trade
has decimated their population endangering them. Loris also do not breed well
in captivity and they have one of the slowest birth rate for a mammal. Before
they are sold as a pet, their teeth are ripped off with a plier as they have a
toxic bite. Many do not survive this treatment. When Rihana took a selfie with
a slow loris in Thailand, two men were arrested.

I asked the man about keeping an endangered animal as a pet.
He told me that his loris dropped off from the tree when it was still a baby.
It would have died if he have left it where he found it. He could not return it
to its parents for they would reject it once it is tainted with the human
smell. So he had no choice but to rear it himself. I have no reason to doubt
him. I have no reason to believe him.

I don't know whether to believe his story or not. I can see that he loves the slow loris and the animal is affectionate towards its benefactor. But in this case, I don't know what is right or not. But if you see the video, you will agree, you have to - that keeping slow loris as a pet except in the most exceptional case (maybe like this one where it need to be saved) is evil.

Quite disturbing story. I don't believe that man a bit. Humans are capable of unspeakable cruelty to animals and to each other. This led me to question if we deserve to be the caretaker of this beautiful planet.

It's indeed quite a disturbing story and video. Just based on facts - the mere fact that such a painful procedure (teeth being pulled off) needs to be done prior to them being suitable as pets makes me think that they are most unsuitable domesticated.

Thanks for the very educational post and video. I am not familiar with the slow lori and was not aware that the animal wild trade was that alive and well. Gosh. Not sure if his story is real or not, but some animals are just not meant to be kept as pets... they just cannot survive this way, and if we truly love them, they need to be where they can be and ought to be.
