I've had just enough time to... try to tame the Water Snake
Taken of today's newspaper's front page - "The Snake Year"
The snake year begins today and it is a water snake.
Oriental fortune tellers all over the world are debating and forecasting what
the Year of the Snake will bring. Let this fortune teller throw his hat in the mix. Before I begin, let me tell you that my prediction last year on the
Year of the Dragon was dead wrong. It was one of the most miserable years of my
Life while most people were expecting great things just because the picture of
the dragon looks majestic. So the hospitals did not have enough beds and there
were reports of mothers giving birth on the floor. And 7 years later, the schools
will not have enough classrooms. And more planners will die from stress…
The next 3 shots are taken of the first house I visited this CNY.
For this year all the hospitals will lose money and 7 years
later the classrooms will be empty just because people don’t like the image of
the snake. They tried to “cutify” it by making the snake friendlier without
much success because taking off the poisonous fangs is acceptable but
eliminating the forked tongue is not. It makes it look like a worm instead. So the
toy companies are losing big money during the best season of the year and that
brings down the bank because we all know how much bankers like to lend to
business of fantasy. And this spirals and slithers down to a recession…
And they all blame the poor snake
Even when it bit no one
Nor does it intend to
They just run from it
Or worse
Kill it with flying stones
And a long stick
If you are born with poisonous fangs
You stay hidden in dark places for
No one trusts your heart of gold
Breathe easy. I was wrong in the Year of the Dragon. I
will probably be wrong in the Year of the Snake. But adoption of pet snakes had already increased several thousand percents!
I just know it that several years later, it will not be safe to wander anywhere
near a monsoon drain but that is another story…
p.s. But I did something different from any other year. Will
share this with you in the next post. Wishing all my readers a Happy Chinese New Year and may you find the success and happiness you have been looking for this year in spite of my prediction :)
ReplyDeleteA 1000 Reasons (busy... slow)
To all my friends and visitors - "Happy Year of the Snake!" and "Gong Xi Fa Cai"!
I don't have a suitable image this year being too busy to go out shooting. Then I saw the above in the front page of today's newspaper and I like it. So I shot it to share with you - the Chinese calligraphy of a larger than life slithering snake and the artist who draws it. Wish I was there to take the actual shot though. What will the Year of the Snake brings? I put on my fortune telling hat and share my prediction with you and it is not all good :)
The snake is the 6th of the 12 animals and not a very popular one so it does exert an economic influence in a number of areas. Read on and find out more -

An excellent image ! I like the color ....festive mood ...and feeling of the joy of artistic creation !
I do hope that as each of the 365 new days of the next year pass ...they will slither, uncoil and unfold in such a way that brings you much more joy than you expect ...and a much better outcome than the Year of the Dragon !
Happy Year of the Snake my friend !

I shot this in the first house I visited this year. Everyone will put their creative touch to the house decorations. I did it as most years mainly with orchids and plants. Maybe, I will show it in some future posts :) But I did something special this year and will share with you in the next post. Meanwhile - "Happy Year of the Snake!" Somehow, that did not sound so right which is why the traders are suffering. Very difficult to make the snake appealing :)

Excellent color and presentation ! The arrangement makes for a fine still life ....and a festive greeting for the New Year !
Snakes evoke such powerful and often contrasting emotions in the human pysche .....mysterious and fearsome .....elegant and repulsive ....beautiful and treacherous . Something about their forked tongue adds to that special ambiance of mixed emotions ....
Happy New Year !

Happy Year of the Snake to you Thou. Lovely image of oranges - they look delicious and abundant. I also enjoyed reading your reflections on the effects of the snake image lol. My impression is that with our increasing knowledge and insight into nature, we as the human race are coming around to understanding and respecting the special role the snake has in the eco-system - for example keeping the number of rats down. And also as I understand it, not all snakes are harmful. Often they like to keep to themselves in their own environment - and only attack when feel threatened or surprised. Having said that - we must also respect our natural aversion to them - as those that are venoumous can do some very serious damage. And by the way I don't know if you know about the tree snake invasion in Guam. Sounds like a pretty horrible predicament. Here is a link to one of the stories on it now.msn.com/there-are-tree-snakes-invading-gu am-and-theyr... In this sense I can see how the image of the snake may not be as appealing. Though dragons themselves don't seem very friendly either - yet a lot of people seem to quite like dragon images : ))
