"The sharp knife of a short life

I've had just enough time..."

- "If I Die Young" The Band Perry

I see Beauty in many things. And like the ghosts that only speak to you if you notice them, they tell me wondrous tales. With my camera and my thoughts, I captured these as faithfully as I can to share with you. And by doing so, they gave me the reasons. And though the thousand reasons may not all be sweet and some indeed bitter; they are still reasons to live. Come to think about it, that is Life, isn't it?

Where Mud Flows Endlessly – The Mud of Sidoarjo

I've had just enough time to...  ponder the greed of men

Taken of the village boys watching the mud flow of Sidoarjo, Java that flooded their village

The mud bubbling out the vent from the ground in the distance indicated by the rising steam

The mud was in the ground
As it always had been
Man’s greed caused it
To be pumped out
To get to the gas within
But man did not reckon
With Nature’s wrath
Now the mud flows endlessly
Inundating the poor man’s house
While the rich ran away
That is the tragedy of Lusi

Houses in higher ground covered up to the roof, all else have gone under

  1. A 1000 Reasons
In May 2006, the drilling of gas in Sidoarjo caused a mud volcano to erupt killing 15 villagers and displacing 40,000. It has so far disgorged 144 million cubic meters of mud and still continued to spew out mud enough to fill 50 Olympic size swimming pools daily and it will continue to do so for another 30 years. The mud pool now covers an area of 7 square meters and is 20 meter deep. A 10 meter dyke is built around it to contain the mud while it is being continuously pumped into the Porong river causing an ecological disaster. What is even more of a disaster is the lives lost and the tens of thousands who were driven from their home. Some still live under dangerous conditions holding on for a better compensation. Lusi is the short form for “lumpur Sidoarjo” or the Mud of Sidoarjo. These young boys were sitting on top of the 10 meter (33 feet) dyke looking at their homes that were completely covered with mud.

Sad tragedy...they who despoil the earth forever now must carry with them the heaviness of the guilt and the scorn of all living creatures whose homes they have destroyed.

    Greetings,
A wonderful photograph but a horrible story! Like you say, we will all pay for this greed and ignorance at some point, and probably not all that far into the Future.
I went to your webpage and enjoyed it, too... a very informative and interesting blog. Wonderful work.
    Take care, Doug.

A beautiful capture that somehow says to me that these children can still see the hope amongst the despair. It is a sad story, that has been repeated over and over for far too many years.

Because disorder unattended can become chaos. And chaos precludes rational thought. The fisherman's daily task of cleaning the boat I imagine has as much to do with keeping the sea birds away as anything. Attracted by the smell of the day's haul of fish they would inundate his boat with their toxic waste. You always make me think on things I've never considered before, thou *~* Lovely detailed shot! Nice diagonal comp!
