"The sharp knife of a short life

I've had just enough time..."

- "If I Die Young" The Band Perry

I see Beauty in many things. And like the ghosts that only speak to you if you notice them, they tell me wondrous tales. With my camera and my thoughts, I captured these as faithfully as I can to share with you. And by doing so, they gave me the reasons. And though the thousand reasons may not all be sweet and some indeed bitter; they are still reasons to live. Come to think about it, that is Life, isn't it?

The Caterpillar or the Leaves

I've had just enough time...   to harvest a butterfly

The caterpillar hiding under a branch...

Two pots of ailing
Flowering plants
Nursed back to health.
New leaves from
Barren branches
Pleased me.
Shocked me
To see leaves of
One stripped bare.
The next day, the
Rest disappeared.
The culprit was found
Fat under a branch
Shyly hiding from
The sun, leaving me
To decide the fate of
The caterpillar
Or the leaves

My prosperity flowers whose leaves were devoured.
Can you see where the caterpillar is hiding?

I wanted the flowers
Of the plants nursed
To health, but strange
Are the fruits of the
Tree one sowed
I harvest a butterfly

What would you choose?
The leaves or the caterpillar or...

If you find one of your favorite plants stripped bare of leaves, what would you do?
Which would you choose - the caterpillar or the leaves?

What a dilemma dear Thou. First I would try to have a kind word with the caterpillar and come to some compromise. If that does't work then I would consider moving it away somewhere far from my special plant - perhaps to another one it might also like. I might try and research into the matter and check whether or not it might in fact be beneficial for the plant to have it's leaves pruned like this and later having this plant re bloom and have the added beauty of the butterflies that were once the caterpillar. . As a side thought I do wonder how plants managed to survive and continue to look beautiful before the introduction of pestacides in this world. There are also other modern day alternatives - introducing another creature (bird/insect) that will sort out your caterpillar and perhaps less cruel ones putting pellets or other pungent spices or fruits that will put off certain creatures hanging around your plant. I hope that is of help to you. Do let us know how it goes.
Wishing you a happy weekend my friend : )
PS: This is a lovely detailed shot by the way of this caterpillar munching away oblivious to the dilemmas it's causing for you : D. I love the glowing eyes too, I myself used to hate the look of caterpillars for many years (a family phobia that was passed onto me). But as I have grown up and looked into it a bit more it is a less of a problem for me now. I realise they have to look scary in order to protect themselves from predators and to give them somewhere to hide so they can turn into a beautiful butterfly eventually.

I didn't know that the eye of the caterpillar was so bright and colorful :)
Tough choice here, and I'm sure we both recognize that not making a decision is also a choice. Extrapolating from this analogy... I suppose it depends on a combination of factors - situational context, priorities, relationships, values and principles. Each situation may call for a different response.

Beautiful caterpillar! Now you know my vote :)

That is one awesome macro dear friend!

    1000 Reasons - Waiting for a new PC :)
The last few days, certain developments have left me thinking about the strange fruits that we harvest from the seeds that we sow. We certainly did not expect some fruits to be so distorted or bitter when our expectation was ripe, juicy, sweet fruits... Sometimes, it can be quite disturbing. Should we continuing sowing when the harvest is so unpredictable?

Can you find the fat caterpillar that devoured my leaves?
It is hiding under one of the branch but it is not so apparent from this image deliberately chosen to confuse you ha ha. I know, bad of me :-)

That looks like a tree from this angle . Do you really think this one caterpillar is guilty of this lol.

    Rebecca Ang
Would be disturbing and disappointing if we reaped something we did not sow. Would be noble to say that I would continue to sow inspite of... but honestly, I don't know if I would and I don't know if I could - it'd be hard. Maybe in some domains of life I might continue to sow inspite of, but certainly not in all domains.

Intriguing branching out and diagrammatic presentation of your concerns, dear friend Thou !
The scheme stands out so strongly against the pale blueish sky as if protecting for the wrong doings ... Love the presence of the high-tech articles in the distant horizon and your deep thoughts revolving around the symbolic image ... You do master quality photography mingling along with philosophical perspective, dear friend.
BTW, I wish you a prosperous New Year full of health and creative thinking !!!
    All the very best,

Re: the harvesting issues - I suppose you must know from the Buddhism perspective that it is our expectations (or perhaps big expectations) that are usually our undoing). Having said that one has to know what steps will secure best survival for you. Perhaps you need to explore the cause of this or perhaps you need to see what other good use you can make of the distorted fruit. From my limited insight into such production matters I can only think of perhaps converting them to fruit Jam or compost?
And by the way I just noticed - I love how the tree and the areal at a distance have similar appearances

Very thoughtful words indeed (as usual) Thou-San. I feel like I see little bit of sunshine on the top-right corner of this picture which is obviously a promising part of having flowers, fruits and watching some lovely butterflies too! Thanks for you kind words on my stream Thou. Enjoy photography, and stay blessed!

    Strange Fruit
    Southern trees
    Bear strange fruit
    Blood on the leaves
    And blood at the roots
    Black bodies
    Swinging in the southern breeze
    Strange fruit hangin'
    From the poplar trees
    Pastoral scene
    Of the gallant south
    Them big bulging eyes
    And the twisted mouth
    Scent of magnolia
    Clean and fresh
    Then the sudden smell
    Of burnin' flesh
    Here is a fruit
    For the crows to pluck
    For the rain to gather
    For the wind to suck
    For the sun to rot
    For the leaves to drop
    Here is
    Strange and bitter crop
    As sung by Billie Holiday
    Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

  4. The way I look at it: the caterpillar already done its job. There are no
reverse action but for you to move on. But take note:

    1. What you sow is akin to posting your work on net. You don't know what
will be the response and it never bother you in the 1st place. You do it to
share your work of love and art and the response was least of your care. So
revisit your intention of sowing in the 1st place. Was the result ever your
1st care? Or you do it because you know you need to and also it is a decent
things to act at the time.

    2. Let the caterpillar be. It will move on by now to the next cocoon phase (ugly phase) if it is well fed, ready to hatch into a beautiful butterfly in some time if all elements go well. You still don't know its final fate at this stage. It is the same with what you sow. It may still yet be darkness before dawn light comes about. Sometime you may not even know whether the beautiful butterfly you see comes from the same one. Just have your heart set pure that when you see a beautiful butterfly, know there is possibility it is from the one you assist to give birth to. And you will be blessed too.

    3. Or the caterpillar may still move on to the next host plant if there is for the next feeding. You won't know which is the target plant to stop it.Thus let it be and let nature takes its course.
You have done the sowing, let others do the watering, harvest... But know that only the Lord make things grow. Thus leave the task to Him.
"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow". I Corinthians 3: 6-7 . Acknowledge the Sovereign one.
In life, each play its role. We don't all get to see the result. You sow, someone water, finally God cause it to grow and someone may harvest.

Whatever the outcome, someone out there know your pain as the sower and
    pioneer and truly appreciate it!

Thank you and have peace, my Friend.
